Madrid . " Pedro Sánchez, we are with you
and don't go!
" were the chants of around 10,000 people, according to official figures, who gathered yesterday outside the headquarters of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) in Madrid to demand that their leader remain at the helm of the country and spearhead the fight against the dirty war waged by the right and far right to " overthrow the government
. "
The pleas of supporters in the street merged with the words of the party's main leaders at the building, where they held a federal committee meeting in the absence of their main supporter. The meeting focused on urging them in many different ways to stand firm and resist the right-wing onslaught.
President Sánchez decided to take a few days to reflect on whether or not it is " worth it
" to continue in office, tired of the constant attacks from the right and the extreme right against his family and especially against his wife, Begoña Gómez , accused in court of alleged crimes of corruption and influence peddling.
The final decision will be announced tomorrow , when he will announce whether he will remain in office, submit to a vote of confidence in the Congress of Deputies, or resign and hand over the reins to someone else at the helm of government.
In this impasse, the PSOE's membership and main organs have mobilized in recent days to " convince
" their leader not to give up.
Thus, around 10,000 people arrived at the party headquarters on Ferraz Street , according to the PSOE, and 12,500, according to the government delegation in Madrid.
People traveled from all over the country on buses chartered by PSOE regional delegations to raise their voices and support Sánchez.
From Galicia to Andalusia and from Valencia to Extremadura, activists and supporters carried clear slogans: " Pedro, we are with you
", " Pedro, don't go
", " Pedro, you are not alone
", which merged with the most recurrent cries during the almost two hours of concentration: " The united people will never be defeated"
and also some messages like " You fascists, you are the terrorists!
"
Carmen, 71, a socialist activist from Valladolid, got up at dawn to begin the journey to the capital to " defend our democracy, which has cost us so much
."
Cipriano López, a 57-year-old Valencian, boarded the bus to Madrid because: " My duty as a socialist is to be here and confront this sinister, cavernous right. We will not take a single step back
."
