Tijuana, December 15.- With the goal of preventing incidents that put the physical integrity of citizens at risk, the Tijuana City Council, headed by Mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez, through the Tijuana Fire Department, issued a series of recommendations for all families who install Christmas trees and lights during this holiday season.
Tijuana Fire Director Rafael Carrillo Venegas said that during the December holidays, the number of calls for accidents of all kinds, primarily home fires caused by the misuse of Christmas items, increases by 100%.
Based on the above, Carrillo Venegas suggested not overloading Christmas trees with electrical extension cords, as these are combustible materials that can quickly catch fire, taking only 20 seconds to fully burn.
Other recommendations
- In addition to not smoking near the Christmas tree, citizens are advised to check that the extension cords are in excellent condition for use.
- If you install extension cords outside your home, make sure they are for outdoor use.
- Make sure that children and people in general avoid running and/or playing around the Christmas tree.
- Avoid placing the Christmas tree near fireplaces, heaters, candles or stoves.
- If you are going on vacation and your house will be left empty, turn off and/or unplug ALL electrical appliances, including those that use gas.
- Turn off and unplug the lights on your Christmas tree, as well as those that are part of the Christmas decorations inside and outside your home at night and if you will be away from home.
- At the end of the Christmas season, recycle your tree, since even in a vacant lot it represents a high risk of fire.
- Give your family smoke detectors and at least one fire extinguisher, this could save lives.
