Van Dijk's injury-time goal saw Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2

Liverpool opened their 2025/26 Champions League campaign with a dramatic opening. The Reds defeated Atletico Madrid 3-2 in their League Phase 1 matchday 1 match at Anfield.

Liverpool took an early lead through goals from Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson. Atletico responded through two goals from Marcos Llorente before Virgil van Dijk sealed the win for the hosts, according to UEFA's official website.

The match was heated from the start. Andy Robertson opened the scoring for Liverpool in the fourth minute after Mohamed Salah's free-kick deflected off him and wrong-footed Jan Oblak.

Just two minutes later, Salah doubled the lead after converting Ryan Gravenberch's pass with a cool finish. The score was 2-0.
