Violence against women in Mexico continues unabated and suffers from institutional indifference.

Mexico City, November 25.- Violence against women continues to rise in Mexico with more than 840 femicides so far this year, a problem that outrages millions of people and is fueled by the ambiguous rhetoric of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador himself .

"They tell me to move on with my life, but how? If my daughter's murderer has no face ?" Karen Reyes, mother of Renata Martinely Luna Reyes, told Efe. She was murdered in her home at the age of 13 on November 29, 2020, in the State of Mexico.

Karen suspects that the murderer was her ex-boyfriend , who months earlier had tried to record the little girl with his cell phone while she was bathing and who took advantage of the fact that Renata was alone at home one day to break in, abuse her and murder her.

Over the past few months, she has sought justice but has encountered indifference from the authorities . "I know nothing will bring my daughter back, but with justice, I can prevent another family from suffering the same thing," she insists.

Serious situation

For Teresa Ulloa, regional director of the Coalition Against Trafficking in Women and Girls in Latin America and the Caribbean, the situation of violence against women in Mexico is " very serious; the number of women and girls murdered every day is increasing ."

On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, commemorated on November 25, the expert affirms that despite some legal progress in Mexico to address gender-based violence, this problem continues to challenge the State .
