Mexico City, January 5.- As soon as the COVID-19 vaccine booster doses for those over 60 are completed, the 50-to-59 age group will follow, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced yesterday. He announced that his administration has paid $160 million for 50 million doses through the United Nations' Covax mechanism, enough for booster doses through July. Therefore, there is no problem with a shortage of vaccines, which is why we will continue to move forward, he emphasized.
During his daily press conference, he explained that at the beginning of his administration, he found the health system to be in worse condition than the education system , and compared them, due to their neglect, to Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) and the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE).
They were in this situation because the neoliberal politicians' goal was to market education and healthcare, privatize everything, turn everything into a business, without any humanistic or social considerations.
He also reiterated his recommendation to return to in-person classes, especially for higher education institutions, because many universities have already gone too far, and they are not returning to in-person classes. Respectfully, because nothing replaces in-person classes; furthermore, not everyone has the opportunity to access the internet.
After some states decided not to return to classrooms this Monday as scheduled on the basic education calendar, the president insisted on returning because there is no major problem. He offered to report any situation that arises, such as an increase in infections, but without making decisions based on political or partisan stances.
If we follow these criteria, imagine if we don't return to school. This is happening in other countries, where authorities hesitate and allow themselves to be intimidated, he said.
In the context of the presentation of the weekly health report, López Obrador assessed that this new variant is, indeed, highly contagious, but fortunately, it is not requiring hospitalization , nor do we have cases, and that is most important, of an increase in deaths.
