Google on Tuesday announced it will set up its first artificial intelligence (AI) center in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, allowing the company to apply its full suite of AI technologies to accelerate AI-driven transformation across the country.
Google will invest approximately US$15 billion (US$1 = Rp16,580) over the next five years (2026-2030) to establish the center in Visakhapatnam. This will be the company's largest investment in India to date.
"This new AI center will combine robust AI infrastructure, data center capacity, new large-scale energy sources, and an expanded fiber optic network, all in one location," Google said in a statement, adding that the center's establishment aligns with the Indian government's Viksit Bharat (India Onward) 2047 vision to accelerate the expansion of AI-based services.
Google's AI center in Visakhapatnam will include a purpose-built data center campus, adding gigawatt-scale computing capacity to help meet the demand for digital services across India and the world.
Developed in conjunction with key partners AdaniConneX and Airtel, the center will be built using the same state-of-the-art infrastructure that powers Google products like Search, Workspace, and YouTube.
According to Google, the AI center will also provide businesses and organizations with the high-performance, low-latency services they need to develop and scale their own AI-based solutions, while accelerating research and development.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and called the initiative a "historic development."
Additionally, Google also stated that the initiative creates significant economic and social opportunities for India and the United States, while also pioneering a major shift in AI capabilities across generations.
