Cybersecurity expert Pratama Persadha believes the issue of photo-buying and selling applications that use artificial intelligence (AI)-based facial recognition technology signals the importance of accelerating the establishment of the Personal Data Protection Agency (PDP Agency).
This institution is needed to ensure that personal data protection measures are implemented in accordance with Law Number 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection (PDP Law).
"The urgency of establishing a PDP Agency is becoming increasingly urgent because the digital world is developing much faster than state bureaucracy," Pratama said when contacted by ANTARA on Friday.
Currently, large-scale data processing technology is developing rapidly, as evidenced by the emergence of photo buying and selling applications that rely on AI.
He emphasized the importance of a dedicated agency capable of effectively and coordinated oversight of personal data. This agency is also crucial for ensuring a redress mechanism for individuals whose data has been misused, whether through mediation or legal channels.
"The PDP Agency should function as an 'independent authority' with the authority to monitor compliance by electronic system providers, conduct audits of data processing algorithms, and impose strict sanctions on violators," Pratama said.
