WhatsApp is testing a limit on the number of messages that users and business accounts can send to unresponsive contacts, in an effort to curb the spread of spam on the platform.
Meta's messaging app was originally designed for personal communication, but with the introduction of groups, communities, and business channels, users are now receiving more messages, often difficult to follow. Many users have complained about unsolicited messages from unknown numbers and business accounts.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Saturday, under this trial policy, every unanswered message sent to a recipient will count towards the monthly quota. For example, if someone sends three messages to a new number without a response, all three will count towards the quota. Messages will not count towards the quota if the recipient replies.
WhatsApp hasn't revealed the exact sending limit, as the company is still testing several scenarios. However, if a user or business account approaches the limit, the system will display a pop-up warning so they can avoid being blocked from sending messages.
The company announced that it will trial these restrictions in several countries over the next few weeks. WhatsApp also emphasized that regular users will likely not be affected by this policy, as the restrictions are intended to crack down on accounts that send bulk messages and create spam.
