Apple is reportedly preparing a number of new satellite-based features for iPhone devices to expand communication capabilities beyond the reach of conventional cellular networks.
As reported by Tech Crunch on Monday, according to a report by Bloomberg technology journalist Mark Gurman, features being developed include a special API so app developers can add satellite connection support to their apps, a new version of Apple Maps that can be used without a cellular or WiFi connection, and the ability to send photos via satellite-based messaging.
In addition, Apple is also developing a “ natural usage ” capability, which allows the iPhone to remain connected to satellites even if the device is not pointed directly at the sky.
