Apple unveiled this 3D accessory that functions as a wallet or smartphone case, and comes in two sizes: the first with a short strap that can be hung on the arm, and the second with a longer strap that is placed on the shoulder.
Although its design resembles a thick sock with a long opening in the middle, the iPhone Pocket's prices have sparked considerable controversy, ranging from $149.95 for the shorter strap to $229.95 for the longer version.
The mockery quickly spread across social media platforms, with critics comparing the accessory to everything imaginable. One user on X jokingly wrote, "Use protection, don't let your iPhone get viruses — iPhone Pocket, the condom for smartphones." Another commented, "I had to check the price three times; I was sure it was a joke."
The accessory was designed in collaboration with the Japanese fashion house ISSEY MIYAKE, which drew inspiration from the idea of a "piece of fabric" and reworked the distinctive pleats in their famous clothing into a phone case.
"The iPhone Pocket design reflects the relationship between the phone and its user, keeping in mind that Apple products are universally beautiful and versatile," said Yoshiyuki Miyamai, the studio's design director.
The accessory is scheduled to be available for purchase online and in Apple stores in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea. It will be available in eight colors, including lime, tangerine, purple, pink, sapphire, and black.
Despite the ridicule surrounding the accessory's $230 price tag, it's not the highest among Apple products. The company, in collaboration with the French fashion house Hermès, offers Apple Watch bands priced at up to $1,249, and also releases Caviar diamond cases crafted from real gold and precious stones, starting at $8,000.
Apple confirmed that the iPhone Pocket will be a limited edition, without specifying how long it will be available.
