He pointed out that coffee does not harm the heart when consumed regularly, nor does it cause calcium to leak from the body, and that drinking it with milk may enhance its benefits.
Orsan explained that coffee is not just a stimulant, but also contains antioxidants, polyphenols, and organic acids beneficial to cells and gut bacteria. He added that the aroma of coffee and the pleasure of drinking it with others contribute to maintaining the brain's neuroplasticity.
The doctor indicated that a safe daily dose of caffeine is about 400 milligrams, equivalent to about four cups of espresso.
He advised pregnant and breastfeeding women to be cautious, as caffeine can increase uterine tension and pass into breast milk, potentially causing sleep disturbances and anxiety in the infant. Therefore, coffee is not the ideal choice during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Orsan said that coffee may temporarily reduce feelings of hunger, but it does not change eating behavior or promote long-term weight loss. Despite its popularity among students and people with busy schedules, it is not an effective way to lose weight.
The doctor confirmed that the benefits of coffee outweigh its potential drawbacks, and that it does not weaken the heart when consumed in moderation. However, excessive or irregular consumption may lead to a temporary increase in heart rate or blood pressure, and sometimes a slight feeling of irregularity in the pulse.
Orsan explained that coffee addiction is not permanent and can be overcome by gradually reducing consumption, switching to decaffeinated coffee, or replacing it with herbal or dandelion tea.
He added, "Strong withdrawal symptoms won't appear after two days of stopping, but the first 24 hours can be unpleasant and may include headaches, nausea, difficulty concentrating, and anxiety."
The doctor explained that coffee improves renal blood flow but does not negatively affect calcium metabolism. He noted that maintaining a calcium-rich diet—such as consuming fermented milk products, cheese, and nuts—prevents any potential negative effects.
Orsan completely refuted this belief, asserting that coffee with milk is harmless and that milk actually enhances some of the coffee's health benefits. However, he cautioned that some types of milk are high in calories, so this should be considered when watching one's weight.
