European Union bans Chinese technology for telecommunications infrastructure

The European Union's executive body, the European Commission, is reportedly pushing its member states to gradually ban the use of equipment from Chinese technology companies Huawei and ZTE from 5G networks and next-generation telecommunications infrastructure.

As reported by Tech Crunch on Wednesday, this step is a continuation of the European Commission's 2020 recommendation that member states refrain from using technology from vendors deemed high-risk, such as Huawei and ZTE.

Now, European Commission Vice President Henna Virkkunen is working to turn the recommendations into binding regulations.

If Virkkunen's proposal is approved, EU member states would be obliged to follow security guidelines set by the European Commission.
