Italian researchers have revealed that consuming cranberries promotes and strengthens bone health

The journal Nutrients explained that researchers from the Italian universities of Milan and Pavia reached these conclusions after reviewing 19 scientific studies that included clinical trials on animals and human cell models.

Studies have shown that consuming larger amounts of anthocyanin compounds found in cranberries increases bone mineral density and strengthens bones. A small clinical trial also showed that consuming cranberries, blueberries, and blackcurrants slightly improves bone mineral density and the body's ability to absorb nutrients.

The results also indicated that cranberry extracts reduce the activity of osteoclasts, enhance the function of osteoblasts, and protect bone tissue from inflammatory and oxidative stress.

However, the researchers cautioned that clinical evidence remains limited due to the small sample size and short follow-up period, and there is still no strong evidence that cranberries reduce the risk of fractures. Therefore, they can be considered a potentially useful addition to the prevention of osteoporosis, but not an independent treatment for strengthening bones.
