Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac admitted that Juan Foyth's penalty and red card played in his team's favor in Wednesday's Champions League match against Villarreal.
In the match at Signal Iduna Park, Dortmund took the lead through Serhou Guirassy in the 45+2 minute. The hosts then doubled their lead through Guirassy's second goal in the 54th minute after he had missed a penalty.
Karim Adeyemi then scored Dortmund's third goal in the 59th minute, before Daniel Svensson sealed a 4-0 victory for Dortmund with his goal in the 90+5th minute.
"The opening goal was very important. It clearly benefited us, as did the penalty and the subsequent red card. But today we were focused for the full 90 minutes, didn't concede, and in my opinion, we absolutely deserved the win," Kovac said, as quoted on UEFA's official website on Wednesday.
