Local media reported that thousands of protesters gathered in the city's central "Magiore" square before the match on Friday evening to express their rejection of Israeli teams participating in international sporting competitions.
The protesters held up signs that read "Show the red card to Israel," demanding that it be banned from participating in sporting events because of its "genocide against the Palestinians" in Gaza, and they chanted "Freedom for Palestine."
A clash occurred between some protesters and security forces during the demonstration. Security forces used water cannons to disperse the protesters, while some demonstrators set up barricades using garbage bins and responded by lighting torches.
Italy had witnessed similar protests on Thursday, ahead of the Olimpia Milano vs. Hapoel Be'er Sheva basketball EuroLeague game in Milan.
