Scientists have noted a significant recent increase in gallstone cases, along with a rise in serious complications such as mechanical jaundice (cholestasis), a condition that leads to a buildup of bile acids in the blood. One cause of this condition is a blockage of the bile duct, which prevents bile from flowing normally into the duodenum and participating in digestion.
Obstructions can be internal, in the form of gallstones in the gallbladder or bile ducts, or external, resulting from pressure on the bile ducts due to connective tissue adhesions or pancreatic cysts.
Marina Kashaeva, an associate professor in the Department of Human Morphology, said: "Bile stasis and increased pressure in the bile ducts lead to significant changes in the structure of liver cells, causing endotoxemia. Simply put, the body is poisoned by substances it produces itself."

A recent study involving 160 patients with non-neoplastic mechanical jaundice showed that if the condition persists for three weeks, it leads to significant destruction of liver cells, with worsening changes in lipid metabolism.
