Carlos Alcaraz cruised into the Australian Open semifinals after fending off attacks from home favorite Alex de Minaur to win 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 at Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday. This is his first semi-final at Melbourne Park.
"I'm very happy with my level of play in every match," Alcaraz said after the match, as quoted by the ATP website. "Today I felt very comfortable, played very good tennis, which makes me very proud."
De Minaur gave glimpses of how to trouble the elite players, especially top seed Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, but it was short-lived, ultimately underscoring the gap at the highest level.
Alcaraz played confidently from the baseline and dictated play, advancing to the semifinals without dropping a set.
The Spaniard is aiming to become the sixth male player in the Open era to complete the Career Grand Slam, following Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Rod Laver.
