Cuban Deputy Health Minister Carilda Peña García reported that the country has entered a "safe zone" after passing the peak of infections with arthropod-borne viral diseases, including dengue fever and chikungunya.

The Cuban Communist Party newspaper Granma quoted Peña García as saying during a meeting with Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel: "Currently, the level of febrile syndrome in the country remains within the safe range. During the third week ending this year, the number of cases decreased by 29.3% compared to the previous week."

The official explained that the decline in the rate of dengue fever and chikungunya infection has continued for three consecutive weeks, in both confirmed and suspected cases, and the decline has been recorded in all regions of the country, especially in the west and center, while the rate of decline is considered lower in the east, but it is also stable.

Despite this positive development, the authorities urged the population not to relax their level of vigilance and to continue with health measures .

For his part, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel stressed during the meeting the need to maintain systematic monitoring of hotspots and to carry out control operations against adult mosquitoes .

In mid-October 2025, Cuban media, citing the Ministry of Health, reported that the epidemiological situation in the country was worsening due to a significant increase in the number of cases of dengue fever, chikungunya and other mosquito-borne infections, stressing that the national health system had the experience and capabilities to cope with this situation .

Experts noted that the peak of infection with this virus usually occurs in Cuba, which has a humid tropical climate, during the months of May, June, September and October, which are the rainy season periods when the activity of the vector mosquitoes increases.
