Demonstrations in Bulgaria: call for elections and resignation of the government

Thousands of people demonstrated in Sofia on Wednesday, braving negative temperatures to demand elections they consider credible, as the country heads towards a new vote. Initially motivated by a controversial 2026 draft budget, the mobilization continued despite the withdrawal of the text, giving way to calls for the resignation of the ruling coalition. Protesters are demanding the resignation of the ruling coalition, denouncing contested electoral practices and the absence of machine voting in the event of early elections. The protest finally targets the persistent influence of Delyan Peevski, MP since 2009, under American and British sanctions for corruption and attacks on the rule of law.
