ECOWAS announces the lifting of the latest sanctions against Guinea

In February 2024, ECOWAS had already relaxed sanctions: restrictions on financial transactions with its member institutions had thus been lifted.

The holding of the constitutional referendum in September and the presidential election in December, which took place in a peaceful climate, led the institution to finally lift all remaining sanctions with immediate effect.

Aged 41, General Doumbouya won the presidential election with an overwhelming score of more than 86 percent of the vote. He therefore established an elected power, after four years of military transition. The former commander of the Guinean army's special forces group had nevertheless affirmed that neither he nor any member of the junta would run and that power would be returned to civilians. Since then, imprisonments, party suspensions, disappearances and kidnappings of critical voices have increased.

ECOWAS urged the government to intensify its efforts to consolidate democracy, good governance and the rule of law, as well as economic and social development.

The country can thus regain its place within the bodies of the sub-regional organization.
