The Indonesian government is currently preparing regulations on artificial intelligence ( AI) in the form of an AI Roadmap and AI Ethics in the form of a Presidential Regulation (Perpres), which is targeted to be signed by the President in early 2026.
Technology expert Onno W. Purbo believes the government's move is appropriate and necessary to protect data and provide certainty for the development of technological innovation in Indonesia.
According to Onno, AI is not just a technology, but a national strategic infrastructure that has a direct impact on the economy, security, and the future of the workforce.
"Clear regulations will help ensure that AI utilization is safe, fair, and does not create dependence on foreign technology," Onno told.
He explained that AI regulations play a role in supporting innovation. These regulations are considered crucial for protecting society and citizens' rights, particularly in the use of AI in public sectors such as education and healthcare.
