Janice Tjen made history after becoming the first Indonesian tennis player to win a main draw match at the Australian Open since Indonesian tennis legend Yayuk Basuki in 1998.
The victory was achieved in her debut at the Grand Slam tournament, Tuesday, by defeating 22nd seed, Leylah Fernandez, 6-2, 7-6 (1) in one hour and 43 minutes at the ANZ Arena, Melbourne.
"I'm very happy to be part of history and to be able to win here for Indonesia," Janice said in a post-match press conference, as quoted by the WTA.
"I think it's special, especially being able to do it in front of my family here. They're here, and I think there are a lot of Indonesians, and a lot of my close friends are here too."
Janice also previously shocked the tennis world by eliminating 24th seed Veronika Kudermetova in the first round of last year's US Open, after fighting her way through qualifying to reach the main draw.
The success marked the second consecutive Grand Slam win of his career.
