Iran: a month of demonstrations and deadly repression

A month after the start of the demonstrations in Iran, the human toll of the repression remains extremely heavy and uncertain. Protests broke out at the end of December in several cities, first against the economic crisis and the fall in purchasing power, before transforming into a large anti-government movement.

According to several human rights NGOs, more than 6,000 people have been killed since the start of the mobilization, the vast majority of them demonstrators, and thousands of other cases are still being verified.

The movement was marked by daily demonstrations in many provinces despite a national internet blackout, one of the measures taken by the authorities to limit the dissemination of information.

Security forces responded to the rallies with considerable force, including live ammunition and the use of dangerous munitions, according to activists and rights organizations.

Official figures remain lower than those of NGOs, but even state accounts recognize several thousand deaths as part of the repression.

Beyond the human losses, tens of thousands of people have been arrested, and the social and economic impact of the movement continues to be felt across the country.
