A study warns of a hidden danger in hair extensions

The largest scientific study of its kind has revealed that dangerous chemicals are present in hair extensions at much higher levels than previously thought.

During the study, researchers analyzed 43 popular hair extension products, whether made from synthetic fibers or natural materials, including human hair. Using high-precision chemical analysis techniques, scientists were able to detect more than 900 groups of chemical compounds in those samples, and were able to identify 169 different substances among them.

What concerned the researchers was that almost all of the samples, with only two exceptions, contained compounds linked to an increased risk of cancer, hormonal disorders, growth problems, and negative effects on the immune system.

Among the most prominent substances found in the hair extension samples studied were flame retardants, phthalates, pesticides, styrene, and organotin compounds. Organotin compounds were a surprise to the researchers, as they are commonly used as stabilizers in plastics and can cause skin irritation and are associated with hormonal imbalance.

Substances associated with an increased risk of breast cancer were also found in 36 out of 43 samples.

Researchers point out the seriousness of these findings, given that hair extensions are worn for weeks on end, meaning that these materials come into contact with the scalp and neck for extended periods, and the use of heat styling tools may release the chemicals contained in them into the air that humans breathe.

Scientists emphasize that manufacturers are not currently obligated to disclose the full ingredients of these products, which calls for stricter control and mandatory ingredient disclosure to enable consumers to assess potential risks and make informed decisions.
