Mourinho is being targeted to become the next Portugal national team coach.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) is eyeing Jose Mourinho to fill the Portugal national team coaching position after the 2026 World Cup.
Mourinho is in his second spell as Benfica manager after signing a two-year contract last September.
However, ESPN reports that the FPF may make a serious approach to lure Mourinho to the Portugal national team if current coach Roberto Martinez leaves his post.
If Mourinho leaves Benfica, former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is the strongest candidate to replace Mourinho at Benfica.
Amorim spent nine years as a player at Benfica. Despite being sacked by Manchester United, Amorim remains one of the most respected coaches in Portugal after his successful spell with Sporting CP.
Mourinho's desire to coach his country is nothing new. Last January, while still managing Fenerbahçe, he expressed his dream of playing international football for a country.
"I would like to participate in the European Championship or the World Cup and unite a country in one team," Mourinho told Corriere dello Sport.
