Nigeria: Presidential elections set for February 20, 2027

In Nigeria, the Independent National Electoral Commission published the schedule for the upcoming elections on Friday.

It plans presidential elections for February 20, 2027, while the vote for state governors will take place on March 26 of next year.

The last presidential elections were held in 2023 in the continent's most populous country. Bola Tinubu won the election in the first round with approximately 36% of the vote. The incumbent president is running for re-election in 2027.

For the upcoming elections, the upper house of the Nigerian parliament has, with great difficulty, adopted an amendment authorizing the live publication of election results.

According to experts, public confidence in the electoral process would improve if the country's 176,000 polling stations were required to publish their results instantly on a centralized public website.

To be elected in the first round, a candidate must obtain at least 25% of the votes in more than two-thirds of the country's 36 states, plus the territory of the federal capital.
