Nutrition expert Dr. Margarita Koroleva warned of the dangers of excessive salt consumption, noting that the link between excessive salt intake and brain health is a scientific fact.
According to her, any food can be harmful to health if consumed in excess, so it's important to eat it in moderation. For healthy individuals, two or three small pinches of salt per day is considered acceptable.
The doctor points out that the mechanism of salt's effect is very simple - excess sodium leads to a rise in blood pressure, which damages the tiny blood vessels in the brain, disrupts its nutrition, and may also stimulate a series of inflammatory processes.
According to her, the balance of water and salt ensures the normal functioning of all body systems, and disruption of this balance due to excessive salt intake not only affects the brain, but may also lead to weight gain due to fluid retention, and when consumed with fatty foods, it causes an additional burden.
The doctor confirms that the habit of constantly adding salt to food is not related to a deficiency of vitamins or minerals, but rather is a result of taste addiction - where a person gets used to very salty foods, so their taste buds become unable to distinguish less salty foods.
