Oncologist Basir Bamatov confirmed that the main causative agent of stomach cancer is still Helicobacter pylori bacteria, as it causes a pre-cancerous condition known as atrophic gastritis.

The doctor points out that the development of stomach cancer is closely linked to long-term inflammatory changes in the gastric mucosa . He explained that the most studied risk factor is Helicobacter pylori infection , which can lead to atrophic gastritis, gastroesophageal metaplasia, and other precancerous changes .

He added that lifestyle and diet also contribute to the development of the disease, in addition to infectious factors, and include:

Excessive consumption of salted, smoked, and processed foods.

Insufficient consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Alcohol consumption.

Bamatov noted that genetic factors are less common, but having a relative with the disease is an additional risk factor .

Regarding preventive measures, Bamatov said they include:

Early diagnosis and treatment of Helicobacter pylori infection.

Dietary and lifestyle modifications.

How is stomach and intestinal cancer diagnosed?

The doctor emphasized that regular checkups play a crucial role in the early detection of the disease and improving the chances of recovery. Colonoscopy , which is recommended every 5-10 years starting at age 45-50, is a fundamental procedure for diagnosing colorectal cancer. He added, "The colonoscopy is performed under anesthesia, and one of its most important advantages is the ability to remove benign tumors that could potentially become cancerous during the same procedure."

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is also the primary method for preventing stomach cancer.

Dr. Zelinsky pointed out that people who suffer from chronic gastrointestinal diseases, follow unhealthy habits, are over 45 years of age, or have relatives who have had gastrointestinal cancers, should pay special attention to their health and undergo regular preventive checkups.
