Al-Busaidi: The United States has lost control of its foreign policy

Oman's Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi asserted on Wednesday that the United States has lost control of its foreign policy.

Al-Busaidi wrote in an article for The Economist: “The United States and Iran were on the verge of reaching a real agreement, and the US-Israeli military strikes on Iran on February 28, just hours after the last and most important talks, were shocking but not surprising.”

In his article, he pointed out that the biggest mistake made by the American administration was "allowing itself to be dragged into this war in the first place," adding: "This is not America's war, and there is no possible scenario in which both Israel and America achieve what they want from it."

He continued: “It seems that the Israeli leadership has convinced America that Iran has been so severely weakened by sanctions, internal divisions, and the American-Israeli bombing of its nuclear sites last June that an unconditional surrender would follow the initial attack and the assassination of the Supreme Leader.”

He added: "It is now clear that achieving Israel's stated goal will require a long-term military campaign, during which America will be forced to deploy ground forces, which will open a new front in the endless wars that President Donald Trump previously pledged to end... This is not what the American government wants, nor does its people, who do not consider this war to be their war."

Al-Busaidi concluded: “The responsibility falls on America’s friends to tell the truth. This begins with the fact that there are two sides in this war who are not gaining anything from it, and that the national interests of both Iran and America lie in ending hostilities as soon as possible. This is a difficult truth to say, because it implies the extent to which America has lost control of its foreign policy.”

It is worth noting that after the American-Israeli aggression against Iran on February 28 and the assassination of a number of leaders, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,  Iran is targeting Israel and American interests in the Gulf and the region.

Iran says its attacks are in response to attacks by the “American-Israeli” alliance against it, and stresses that its operations in the Gulf region are limited to “self-defense” and do not target countries that host American facilities. However, several Gulf states have condemned what they described as “Iranian attacks” on their sovereignty, asserting their “right to respond.”
