An Arab statement accuses Israel of trying to tear Lebanon apart and calls for urgent international intervention

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, strongly condemned what he described as the ongoing Israeli attacks on Lebanon, in light of the intensive military operations it is carrying out on Lebanese territory.

The Secretary-General of the Arab League described Israel’s continued targeting of Lebanese infrastructure and bridges as a blatant violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty, security and stability, and a clear breach of international law.

Jamal Rushdi, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, explained that Israel’s goals have become exposed in its pursuit of establishing a buffer zone in southern Lebanon and its systematic policy of tearing apart the Lebanese map and displacing the Lebanese people.

Aboul Gheit stressed the responsibility of the UN Security Council to put an end to these Israeli attacks and stop them immediately, and to compel Israel to respect international law and relevant Security Council resolutions, including the full and uncompromised implementation of Security Council Resolution 1701.

The official spokesperson expressed the Secretary-General’s concern about the worsening state of tension in Lebanon as a result of the Israeli aggression, stressing the Arab League’s support for all efforts made by the Lebanese state to maintain civil peace and deal with the acute humanitarian crisis in Lebanon and its serious social consequences, including through the Councils of the Ministries of Health and Social Affairs.

Southern Lebanon has witnessed a sharp military escalation since the beginning of March, following the outbreak of the American-Israeli war on Iran, with Hezbollah joining the conflict directly by launching missiles and drones at Israel in response to Israeli-American strikes on Iranian targets.

Israel responded with intensive airstrikes and limited ground incursions into southern Lebanon, targeting civilian infrastructure, bridges, residential areas in Beirut and elsewhere, and Hezbollah sites, with an official announcement of the establishment and expansion of a "buffer zone" inside Lebanese territory south of the Litani River, reaching several additional kilometers, according to Israeli reports.

The Arab League issued several statements of condemnation, focusing on rejecting Israel's "expansionist policy," supporting the Lebanese government's decision to ban Hezbollah's military activities and restrict weapons to the state, and calling on the Security Council to fully implement Resolution 1701.
