Serious complications from measles in children are a concern amid the rise in cases of the disease in Indonesia throughout 2025 and early 2026, which not only causes mild symptoms but also has the potential to trigger pneumonia, severe dehydration, and even encephalitis.
"Measles is often considered a common disease, but in some conditions, this disease can cause serious complications and even risk death, especially in children who have not been immunized or have low immunity," said Dr. Venty, Sp.A, CIMI, a pediatrician at Bethsaida Hospital Gading Serpong.
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection spread through droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus can also persist in the air and on surfaces, increasing the risk of transmission in unvaccinated environments.
