Pope Francis calls for a ban on military airstrikes

Pope Leo XVI strongly criticized the air strikes, saying they were indiscriminate and should be banned, in his latest anti-war remarks as the conflict over Iran entered its fourth week.

The Pope, the first American to head the Catholic Church, did not specifically mention the widening conflict during a meeting with executives and employees of the Italian airline, but he strongly condemned the use of air power in the war.

Media reports confirm that the Trump administration has approved the replenishment of Saudi Arabia's weapons and ammunition stockpiles.
The Pope said, "No one should fear that threats of death and destruction will come from the sky," according to Reuters.

He added: "After the tragedies of the 20th century, aerial bombardment should have been banned forever, yet it still exists. This is not progress, it is regression."

The Pope has repeatedly called for a ceasefire in the Iran war, and on Sunday described the conflict as "a disgrace to the whole human family".

This comes as the war continues for the 24th consecutive day, with the exchange of missile and drone strikes between Iran and the US-Israeli alliance, amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.
