Dr. Ekaterina Sergeeva points out that inhaling citrus scents can reduce stress levels through their effect on the nervous system
She says: "When citrus scents are inhaled, the molecules of the basic compounds, especially limonene, stimulate the olfactory receptors in the nose, which send an immediate signal to the limbic system in the brain, which is responsible for emotions and memory, which in turn reduces the activity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, leading to a decrease in the production of cortisol and adrenaline."
According to her, lemons and oranges have the strongest effect because they contain the highest concentration of limonene. Grapefruit also has an effect, but its scent is often considered refreshing.
The doctor notes that to achieve this effect, one should inhale the scent of citrus fruits for 5-10 minutes, taking deep, calm breaths. This method can be used daily as a way to relieve stress, for example in the morning or before bedtime.
According to her, there is no significant difference between the scent of fresh fruit and natural essential oils, but the effect of the oils is more lasting. Synthetic perfumes do not produce a similar effect, so aromatherapy should only be used if there are no allergies.
