Bonucci believes Pep Guardiola is the right coach for the Italian national team

Former Juventus defender Leonardo Bonucci believes Pep Guardiola is the right coach to restore the Italian national team to its former glory.

Italy itself is certain to miss the World Cup for the third consecutive edition, so Bonucci said the national team needs radical changes.

"If we want radical changes in the national team, I would say the right person is Pep Guardiola. It's very difficult, but dreaming doesn't cost anything," Bonucci said, as quoted by Sky Sports on Tuesday (April 21).

Italy is currently looking for a new head coach after failing to qualify for the World Cup after losing to Bosnia-Herzegovina in the play-off final.

The defeat led to Gennaro Gattuso resigning from his position as coach.

Pep Guardiola's name has also emerged as a candidate, even though the Spanish coach is still under contract with Manchester City until June 2027.

Guardiola has previously stated he is open to coaching a national team after leaving the club.
