Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon: more than 200 dead and 1,000 wounded

Rescue teams pulled bodies from collapsed buildings in the capital and in southern villages, including Abbassiyeh, near Tyre, where smoke was still rising Thursday morning. The scale of the bombing made it the deadliest day of the latest phase of the war between Israel and Hezbollah and revived fears of a wider regional conflagration. The death toll rose sharply from the previous official figure of 182 dead and 890 wounded, suggesting that more victims remained trapped under the rubble overnight. Israeli strikes hit central Beirut as well as southern Lebanon and other areas, damaging homes, businesses, and major roads in densely populated areas. In Beirut, emergency crews worked through the night in neighborhoods like Tallet el-Khayat, while hospitals struggled to treat the wounded. According to Lebanese officials, the raids targeted civilian areas without warning, increasing the pressure on an already fragile health system.
