Middle East war: at least 56 cultural sites damaged in Iran

The Iranian Ministry of Cultural Heritage says at least 56 museums and historical sites have been damaged in Iran during two weeks of US and Israeli airstrikes.

The Golestan Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dating from the Qajar era in Tehran, as well as the Shah Abbas Mosque and the Chehel Sotoun Palace, dating from the 17th century, in Isfahan, are among these cultural sites.

According to the Iranian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, the province of Tehran has the most damaged monuments (19), to varying degrees.

However, sites located in the Kurdistan region, in Lorestan and in Kermanshah were also affected.

UNESCO has expressed alarm at the damage and risks to heritage sites in the face of the deluge of airstrikes, missiles and drones in the Middle East, mentioning historical sites in Iran, Israel and Lebanon already damaged and hundreds of others potentially threatened by the war.
