Russia: Iranian foreign minister to meet with Putin

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi landed in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Monday morning. He is scheduled to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin later today.

This visit to Russia marks a new stage, after a busy weekend in which the foreign minister visited Pakistan and Oman, a country with which it shares the Strait of Hormuz.

Araghchi's visit comes as the standoff between Iran and the United States in the Strait of Hormuz persists despite a ceasefire, keeping oil prices at a high level.

This is a good opportunity for us to consult with our Russian friends on the developments that have taken place in connection with the war during this period and on what is happening now," Araghchi said in a video interview broadcast by state media.

The Iranian Foreign Minister was in Muscat on Saturday to meet with senior Omani officials to discuss bilateral relations and regional developments, the Iranian Foreign Ministry said.

This visit is the second leg of a regional tour that began Friday in Islamabad, Pakistan and will end in Russia.

In Islamabad, Araghchi met with Pakistani army chief Asim Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency. They discussed Iran's position on ending the war involving the United States and Israel, as well as bilateral relations and broader regional developments.

In a message posted on X, Abbas Araghchi described his visit to Pakistan as "very fruitful" and said that Iran appreciated Pakistan's "good offices and fraternal efforts" "to bring peace to our region."

He indicated that he had conveyed Iran's position on a framework aimed at definitively ending the war, adding: "It remains to be seen whether the United States is truly serious about diplomacy."

After Araghchi's departure from Pakistan, US President Donald Trump said he had cancelled a planned visit to Pakistan by special envoy Steve Witkoff and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Donald Trump will hold a crisis meeting on Iran with his national security and foreign policy leadership team.

So far, all attempts to negotiate a lasting ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz have failed.
