South Africa: Geordin Hill-Lewis's ambitions to lead the Democratic Alliance

South Africa's second party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), on Sunday elected the mayor of Cape Town to lead its campaign for the 2029 national elections, intensifying its efforts to steal votes from the ANC, which is losing momentum.

In South Africa, Geordin Hill-Lewis has taken the reins of the Democratic Alliance, the second largest national political party, and he promises to lead it to the head of the country.

I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of you, all the delegates of the Democratic Alliance, for placing your trust in me. I accept this responsibility with humility, gratitude and a deep sense of duty. I stand before you as the newly elected leader with one promise. For however long I have the privilege of serving in this role, I will dedicate myself to the mission of building a stronger South Africa for all," he said.

This election marks a new beginning for the Democratic Alliance, which joined the coalition government in 2024.

"He is a formidable leader who adheres to the values of the Democratic Alliance and cares about South African citizens at the local level, who wants to lead South Africa to new heights in order to ensure greater diversity and greater participation of all South Africans ," says a supporter of the DA.

Geordin Hill-Lewis has also been mayor of Cape Town since 2021. This tourist city is considered one of the best-run municipalities in the country. The new leader of the Democratic Alliance intends to replicate this success within his party and at the national level.

In his inaugural address, he affirmed his ambitions, believing that his party could "win more cities than ever before" and in the long term take the lead of the national government by the 2029 elections.
