South Africa: Government warns against xenophobic attacks

As the country has been gripped by a wave of xenophobic attacks targeting African nationals since late March, South African authorities promised on Friday to crack down.

This statement comes after the South African ambassador to Ghana was summoned on Thursday.

Many Ghanaians are among the foreign nationals who have been victims of violent incidents in South Africa, primarily in the Eastern Cape province. They are accused of being responsible for the hardships plaguing the local population.

The South African foreign minister, for his part, warned against any acts of anarchy, intimidation and violence against migrant communities.

Civil society organizations have been called upon to play their part in restoring calm, while voices are already denouncing the authorities' negligence in the face of this rise in xenophobia.
