The Malagasy New Year and the return of an ancestral tradition

In Madagascar, the sacred bathing festival, known as Alahamadibe, is celebrated from March 18th to 21st at Doany Ambonga Ilaniara, southwest of the capital Antananarivo. It marks the return of the Malagasy New Year, a pre-colonial custom abandoned for decades. The aim is to revive Malagasy customs and traditions—linked to centuries-old traditions.

“A large part of what defines Malagasy identity has been lost, destroyed or crumbled away. We were plunged into a deep sleep, as if under the influence of a very powerful spell, almost to the point of overdose. Today, we must wake up, regain our senses and realize that blood flows in our veins — and that this blood is Malagasy,” explains Mikolo Hasina Ankoay Andrianarisoa, president of the organizing committee, guardian of tradition.

A huge crowd also enjoyed the event at the Mahamasina stadium in Antananarivo, dancing and enjoying local bands and music.

The sacred nature of Manjakamiadana is also being restored, and this is essential. After so long, we have finally been able to perform the rituals freely and in their entirety on the sacred stone, without any hindrance. This is very important; it has a major impact on the life and future of the nation. This has not happened since the time of the kings. Today, on this New Year's Day, it brings us great joy.”

[Editor's note: Manjakamiadana was a sacred place in the 19th century and the seat of the kingdom of Madagascar],” says Davida Rakoto, organizer, guardian of tradition.

This spiritual and identity renewal of the Great Island is marked by the transmission of the sacred flame between the districts of the capital.

“Ambohitrabiby is the cradle of the Merina kingdom, and celebrating the Malagasy New Year here has a deeply sacred character. That is why the symbol of fire is lit here first, before being carried throughout the city – and even throughout Madagascar,” explains Violette Randrianjatovo, deputy director of a French school abroad.

On March 8th, on the occasion of International Women's Day, a festival and a parade had honored women in Malagasy society.
