The United States could welcome even more white South Africans. According to several sources cited by Reuters, the Trump administration is considering raising the annual refugee quota to allow more white South Africans to enter the country.
The current government has initially set a ceiling of 7,500 places for refugees. An additional 10,000 places could be added to allow Afrikaners who wish to do so to obtain refugee status.
From the beginning of his second term, Donald Trump had suspended the process of welcoming refugees before issuing an executive order giving priority to the resettlement of Afrikaners of European origin.
The US president claims that this white minority faces racial persecution in a predominantly Black South Africa. The South African government has consistently and firmly denied these allegations.
South Africa, a country marked by years of racial tensions and apartheid, is home to a multicultural population still impacted by this painful past. In this country of over 65 million inhabitants, the Black population is the majority at 80.2%, Coloureds (a term designating people of mixed race) represent 8.8%, and Whites represent 8.4%. Finally, Asians make up 2.5% of the population.
