Zambia says it is holding the remains of former president Edgar Lungu

The Zambian government announced on Wednesday that it had taken possession of the remains of former president Edgar Lungu, pursuant to a ruling by the South African courts.

Zambian authorities added that the body of the former head of state had been transferred from a funeral home in Pretoria, the South African capital, to another facility.

In the aftermath, the deceased's family brandished an urgent order that reportedly ordered the body to be returned to the funeral home, where it had been since his death.

This is the latest episode in the standoff between the Zambian government and the family of Edgar Lungu. At the heart of the battle is control of the funeral and the burial site.

A dispute that has deprived the former president of a burial since his death in South Africa on June 15, 2025.
