Zenit St. Petersburg defeated their host Dynamo Makhachkala 1-0 in a match that brought them together today, Saturday, as part of the 25th round of the Russian Football League, thus rising to the top of the overall league standings.
The match witnessed strong competition between the two teams, and ended in favor of the visitors thanks to the only goal scored by mistake by Dynamo Makhachkala captain Nikita Glushkov in the 78th minute, after he tried to intercept a precise cross from Zenit player Daniel Kondakov, so the ball settled in his team’s net and gave Zenit the three points.
Before the decisive goal, Zenit star Alexander Sobolev missed a penalty kick awarded to his team in the 70th minute, after it was brilliantly saved by Dynamo Makhachkala goalkeeper David Volk.
With this victory, Zenit climbed to the top of the Russian Premier League with 55 points, just two points ahead of their closest rival Krasnodar, who host Baltika later today in the same round of matches.
In contrast, Dynamo Makhachkala's tally remained at 23 points, placing them in 12th position.
