Amid medical neglect, the Palestinian Prisoners' Affairs Authority warns of a scabies outbreak in Ofer prison

The commission said in a statement that its lawyer, who visited the prison, observed a number of prisoners suffering from the disease for months, without providing them with the necessary treatment.

The statement indicated that the prisoner, Usaid Maarouf, from the town of Safa near Ramallah, has been suffering from scabies for about five months, with pimples spreading on his hands and parts of his body, in addition to severe itching, especially at night.

Prisoner Atta al-Barghouthi (18 years old), from the town of Beit Rima near Ramallah, also suffers from the same disease without receiving treatment. The lawyer of the Commission quoted him as saying that the conditions inside the prison are “getting worse,” accusing the prison administration of taking the mattresses from the prisoners during sleep, forcing them to sleep only on their clothes.

The statement mentioned that prisoner Fares Murra, from the town of Beit Duqqu, north of Jerusalem, also suffers from scabies and severe itching without treatment, in addition to prisoner Muhammad Sharaka (18 years old) from the Jalazone camp near Ramallah, who complains of painful boils spreading on his body without medical care.

The commission's lawyer warned of a shortage of clothing for the prisoners, explaining that each prisoner only owns the clothes he is wearing, and they are not replaced until they are torn and a long period of time has passed.

Since the outbreak of the aggression against the Gaza Strip in October 2023, Palestinian human rights organizations have accused the Israeli authorities of escalating violations against prisoners, including medical neglect, torture, starvation, and strip searches.

According to Palestinian prisoners’ institutions, Israel is holding more than 9,400 Palestinians in its prisons, including 86 female prisoners and 3,376 administrative detainees, while the number of arrests since October 2023 has exceeded 23,000 cases.
