The Conversation published a report linking vitamin B12 to an increased risk of cancer.

The report’s authors explained that vitamin B12 is essential for the body because it ensures the stability of nervous system functions, participates in the formation of red blood cells, repairs DNA, and supports the growth of all cells in the body, whether healthy or those that may turn into cancerous cells. This has prompted many researchers to study whether taking high doses of it for long periods may lead to the growth of cancerous cells.

The report noted that a 2025 study revealed a link between vitamin B12 and cancer. It observed an increased risk of cancer in cases of deficiency or excess of this vitamin in the body. The study authors also found that cancer patients have abnormally high levels of this vitamin in their blood, indicating that this increase may be a result of the disease and not a cause of it, as tumors can disrupt the liver functions responsible for metabolizing the vitamin, or increase the level of proteins that bind to it in the blood.

According to health experts, it is almost impossible to consume dangerous amounts of vitamin B12 through regular food, but the risks lie in its uncontrolled consumption through dietary supplements. Therefore, it is necessary to consult a doctor and undergo the necessary examinations before taking such supplements.
