China has agreed to use an experimental 6GHz frequency spectrum to develop sixth-generation (6G) communication technology.

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in a statement that the approval—granted to the IMT-2030 (6G) technology development group—allows for 6G technology trials to be conducted in designated areas. The statement indicated that this step aims to promote technical research, testing, and validation based on key scenarios and performance indicators established by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for 6G networks.

The ministry also stated that this is expected to help accelerate China's efforts in research and development, standardization and manufacturing of 6G technology, and promote the high-quality development of the country's 6G sector.
