 The Russian Academy of Sciences mourned the death of scientist and researcher Vadim Pokrovsky, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 71.

A statement issued by the Izmirov Institute of Occupational Medicine of the Russian Academy of Sciences reads: “Today, Wednesday, May 20, 2026, the Russian epidemiologist, Vadim Pokrovsky, passed away suddenly at the age of 71. Pokrovsky was a scientist, member, and professor of medical sciences at the Russian Academy of Sciences, and received many important awards in Russia in the field of epidemiology.”

The institute noted that Pokrovsky's career was closely linked to preventive medicine, as the scientist contributed significantly to the development of Russian epidemiology theory and practice, which helped reduce infection and mortality rates from infectious diseases in Russia.

The institute added in its statement: "Pokrovsky devoted a large part of his life and scientific work to the problems of preventing, diagnosing, treating HIV infection and related diseases. He also founded a scientific school and trained a large number of specialists in the field of combating the spread of HIV."

Pokrovsky was born in Moscow in 1955, graduated in 1978 from the Moscow Institute of Dentistry, and received a Doctor of Science degree in 1990. Since 2001, he has headed the Russian Federal Scientific and Methodological Center for the Fight Against and Prevention of HIV Infection, and during his career he has contributed to the authorship of more than 300 scientifLic papers.
