DRC: residents in shock after attacks near the border with Uganda

Several bodies were transported Thursday to the morgue in the village of Oicha, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

An Islamic State-affiliated group attacked villages in Congo near the border with Uganda, killing at least 40 people and burning and looting homes, a local civil society organization said.

Samuel Mahamba, a relative of one of the victims, said they were told that "these terrorists were no longer in the bush, but today we don't even know where they came from".

"It’s up to the government to decide; we ask for nothing but peace. But we have been demanding this peace for a long time, and nothing has changed. We are exhausted, and we no longer even know who to tell about our suffering. We no longer trust our government", he added.

On Thursday, several relatives of the victims went to the morgue to recover the bodies of their loved ones who died during the attack.

These attacks were carried out by the Allied Democratic Forces during the night from Wednesday to Thursday afternoon, according to Charité Banza, head of the Ituri civil society group, and Kinos Katua, a member of the group who resides in the region.
