Google unveiled a range of updates and new products, most notably a feature to reduce the phenomenon of "compulsive browsing of negative news" by encouraging users to stop and think before opening certain applications.

The company named the new feature "Pause Point," a tool that allows users to select specific apps and display a 10-second countdown before opening them. During this time, the user is asked to consider why they are opening the app, in an effort to reduce random or excessive use.

Google said that during the downtime, users can do a short breathing exercise, set a timer to avoid spending too much time browsing, and can also browse favorite photos or switch to alternative apps, such as audiobook apps.

The company explained that current controls, such as app usage timers or blocking apps entirely, are not always suitable, adding that some users need a "middle ground" that allows apps to be used but with clear awareness and intent.

Users will be able to activate the feature on the apps they choose, while disabling it will not be easy, as it requires restarting the phone to turn it off, which the company said gives the user an additional opportunity to think before disabling the tool.

In the same context of updates, Google also announced a new update for Chromebook devices called "Googlebook," which is based primarily on the "Gemini" artificial intelligence system. The company said the new device represents a "reimagining" of laptops, by moving from the idea of a traditional operating system to an integrated smart system based on artificial intelligence technologies.

Google added: "More than 15 years ago, we introduced Chromebooks designed for a world that prioritizes cloud services, and today we see an opportunity to rethink the concept of laptops in light of the development of smart systems."
