“My goal is to change the country”: Ocasio-Cortez enters the race for the US presidency early

Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez sparked widespread controversy within the Democratic Party after statements in which she hinted that she would not rule out running for the White House in the future, during a dialogue with Democratic strategist David Axelrod in Chicago last week.

Ocasio-Cortez, known as “AOC,” refused to describe her political ambitions as tied to a position or seat, stressing that her goal is “much bigger” and is to “change the country,” adding that presidents and officials come and go, while issues like universal health care remain.

Her statements have reignited the debate within democratic circles about the possibility of her running for president in 2028, especially given her growing national presence and her ability to address the progressive base and youth.

A number of Democratic strategists believe that Ocasio-Cortez has an enthusiastic popular base and a ready organizational structure that could give her an early advantage if she decides to run, while others within the party believe that she may be too “polarizing” a figure for a national presidential race.

Democrats also praised her response to the nomination question, saying she provided a smart political answer that avoided falling into traditional traps, while some described her as one of the most capable figures in communicating with voters angry at the current party leadership.

Although she is not leading in early polls for 2028, some polls have shown her running neck and neck with prominent names such as Kamala Harris, Gavin Newsom and Pete Buttigieg, and she enjoys strong support among young voters.

Observers believe that if Ocasio-Cortez decides to run, she will benefit from the great media momentum and the progressive base previously built by Senator Bernie Sanders, in addition to having a large and influential private audience.
